When I ran for Governor, Republican mayors hated my proposal to cap property taxes to inflation plus population growth. They swore there was no place to cut; their budgets were honed to the bone.

What comes next is stunning…

Recently a political friend of mine filed FOIA requests to see the village manager’s contract for his hometown of Palatine. As a private sector executive compensation expert, he did a very professional one page overview of the manager’s comp plan. Base salary: $183,700. Total comp: $350,000 per year. Click here for link.

In the analysis, there is a word that I wasn’t familiar with- perquisites. And this contract has $23,000 of perquisites: social club membership, health club membership, luxury car, computer, and home hookups for internet, fax/modem.

The manager receives a cash bonus of $35,000.

The retirement benefits ($51,000) not only include the gold-plated pensions (that we all know about) but also a village funded deferred compensation plan ($11,000 extra!).

The contract benefits ($39,500) include: full health, dental, prescription, disability and care insurance coverage.

If he leaves, he gets a FULL YEAR of severance base salary: $183,700.

As we explore this, it looks like most villages have similar comp plans for their managers.

My friend is taking his FOIA’s statewide and plans to make this a focal point. I think what he is exposing is a national disgrace.

Illinois Government- at all levels- is crushing the private sector.
